The day started with grey, damp weather, which is always part of the challenge with a winter wedding. With the ceremony at 2pm and the light fading quickly afterwards, the filming plan had to stay flexible and efficient.
Morning prep began with Sheree, her bridesmaids, her mum and her daughter. The bridal prep room at The Mill Barns is spacious and beautiful, but the mixed lighting can be tricky, so I usually bring a small light in early and use it again later in the day when the speeches begin.
Martin was a little camera shy at first, so the morning was also about helping him relax. A few awkward jokes usually do the job. Once everyone settled in, the day started to flow properly.
After the ceremony, we moved quickly through family photos and couple portraits. It was cold, it had been raining, and there was not much daylight left, but the covered areas and the back garden at The Mill Barns gave us enough shelter and texture to create something that still felt romantic and calm.
The speeches brought the emotional centre of the day, especially from Sheree's sister, her dad and Martin himself. Later, after the cake cut, Sheree and Martin spent their first dance completely locked into each other, before the dance floor filled with guests and the party took over.
How I film weddings at The Mill Barns
The Mill Barns is compact in the best way. Prep, ceremony, portraits, speeches and evening reception are all close enough that the day does not feel scattered. That helps massively when the weather changes or the light disappears quickly.
I plan around the light early, especially for winter weddings.
I bring extra lighting for darker rooms and evening speeches when needed.
I keep portraits efficient so couples are not standing outside longer than they need to.
I use the covered areas and back garden when rain or wind becomes part of the day.
I guide gently when needed, but keep the film feeling natural and true to the couple.
